Callsign rules

According to SERA, a callsign must be one of these three types:

Maximum 7 characters
OYABC, the hyphen not counted, as in the flight plan
aType (a)
Registration marking
Example
OY-ABC
A privately owned aircraft
Said as “Oscar Yankee Alfa Bravo Charlie”

No operator, so the registration is the whole callsign.

bType (b)
Telephony+Last 4 characters of the registration marking
Example
OY-HMU
Operated by Dancopter
Said as “Dancopter Yankee Hotel Mike Uniform”

Last four characters only, so the O drops off. Used by operators who fly by registration rather than by flight number.

cType (c)
Telephony+Flight identification
Example
Flight 609
Operated by Scandinavian
Said as “Scandinavian six zero nine”

Used by most airline flights.

Abbreviating a callsign

Two forms only, and both shorten the registration and nothing else.

Type (a), the registrationFirst letter, then at least the last two. OY-BHK becomes O-HK, said “Oscar Hotel Kilo”.
Type (b), telephony and registrationTelephony, then at least the last two. “Dancopter Yankee Hotel Mike Uniform” becomes “Dancopter Mike Uniform”.
Never the designatorAn airline designator is never abbreviated. The operator’s name is said in full every time, which is why type (c) has no short form at all.
Never when two could be confusedIf two callsigns on the frequency could be mistaken for each other, neither of them is shortened.

Telephony is the spoken name, not the written code. SAS is written in the flight plan, “Scandinavian” is said on the radio. DTR is written, “Danish” is said. Private aircraft have no telephony at all, so they use the registration marking.

Nationality markers

The start of an aircraft’s registration shows which country it’s registered in.
